New Staff Feature: Will Broughton joins the Foundation

Please welcome Will Broughton, who joined the Foundation for Health Leadership & Innovation last month as the Program Director for Health ENC . In this role, Will coordinates a regional community health needs assessment in 33 eastern North Carolina counties while working to build coalitions and partnerships to address health issues identified in the assessment process.

We asked Will a few questions to get to know him better:

Where are you from and how did you end up in North Carolina?

I was born and raised in Raleigh, NC

 What drew you to this line of work?

Prior to getting my MPH, I was pursuing a doctorate degree in Anthropology. Having just completed my MA in Anthropology at ECU, I was applying to doctoral programs all over the county. In the midst of applying, I submitted an application to the University of Pittsburgh, which offered a joint PhD in Anthropology and MPH. I ended up not being accepted to any of the doctoral programs but was accepted into the MPH program at Pitt. Having no other decent job prospect at the time, I packed my bags, moved to Pittsburgh, and fell in love with public health!

What type of organizations have you worked for in the past?

Prior to FHLI, I worked at the Brody School of Medicine in the Office of Health Access, which was my first job out of grad school at Pitt.

What are you excited for in this position?

Over the past three years, I’ve seen this program grow from just an idea to a functioning program. I’ll be very excited to see how Health ENC grows and develops in the future.

What do you like to do for fun/ in your free time?

Most mornings you will find me walking or running with my dog, Summer. I like to think I’m a fairly crafty person – I knit, have made a quilt, even reupholstered an arm chair once. Also, I have a bit of a green thumb and my apartment kinda looks like a jungle.
