Every year, FHLI programs advocate for a slate of public health policies to improve access to care in rural North Carolina and make it easier for everyone to receive the mental and oral health services they deserve.

Rural Health Priorities

Check out the North Carolina Rural Health Association’s 2025 state priorities, voted on by the Association’s membership spanning across our state. These policies include:

  • Invest in natural disaster resilience
  • Build a stronger safety net
  • Expand and enhance access to rural broadband
  • Build a more robust rural health care workforce
  • Support maternal and child health
  • Address youth mental health

Behavioral Health Priority: Introduce mental health well visits.

Check out this 1-pager to learn more about our Center of Excellence for Integrated Care priority to add a mental health preventive care option for North Carolina children.

Oral Health Priorities: Build and retain a robust dental workforce across every corner of North Carolina.

Download the North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative’s newest publication, the Portrait of Oral Health, to learn more about the team’s three policy priorities for 2025:

  1. Retain and strengthen the safety net by investing new funding in the North Carolina Medicaid Dental Program.
  2. Educate new providers across North Carolina by creating a rural areas forgivable loan pilot program.
  3. Broaden the safety net’s ability to provide quality care through legislation allowing all dental staff to practice at the full scope of their licensure.
